Our Score
This touching, realistic drama stars Robert Mitchum as the former rodeo champ forced to retire through injury, and Arthur Kennedy as the young man whom Mitchum coaches. Of course, there's also a woman - Susan Hayward, who's married to Kennedy and takes Bob's fancy. Mitchum extended his range considerably with this role, and Lee Garmes's sombre black-and-white photography mirrors the characters' drab, nomadic existence. A critical and box-office failure at the time, it is now regarded as one of director Nicholas Ray's finest films.

A retired rodeo star returns to his hometown, where he offers to train an aspiring rider so he can win enough to realise his dream of buying his own ranch. Adventure, starring Robert Mitchum and Susan Hayward.
