Our Score
Director Fred Zinnemann's powerful adaptation of James Jones's bestseller won eight Oscars, upset the military and resurrected the acting career of Frank Sinatra. It's a portrait of life in and around the US Army's Schofield Barracks at Pearl Harbor in the days leading up to the Japanese attack in December 1941. Bullying, sadism and adultery eventually give way to heroism and sacrifice as the bombs fall. The characters may sound like stereotypes - the macho sergeant (Burt Lancaster), the unhappy wife (Deborah Kerr), the reluctant boxer (Montgomery Clift), the persecuted Italian GI (Frank Sinatra) and the sadistic stockade sergeant (Ernest Borgnine) - but they're brought to life by superb performances. And amid all the brawling, Lancaster and Kerr embrace in the pounding surf in what remains one of cinema's most iconic clinches.

A former boxer stationed at an American army base in peacetime Hawaii is manipulated by a sadistic superior, and a sergeant has an affair with a married officer's wife. However, their lives are set to change dramatically as the Japanese launch an attack on Pearl Harbour. Second World War drama, with Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Montgomery Clift, Frank Sinatra, Ernest Borgnine and Donna Reed.
