Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A runaway teenage boy finds himself drawn to a young woman with the power to control the Tokyo weather in this Japanese animated blend of dreamy fantasy and social grit. It's certainly a worthwhile follow-up by director Makoto Shinkai to his critical and box-office hit Your Name, and builds on a similar blend of imaginative storytelling, heady adolescent romance, folklore and spirituality, all set to a strumming J-pop soundtrack. This time, the atmosphere is a little more worldly, with a setting in the Japanese capital's seedy Kabukicho district and a stray handgun mixed up in the action. Emotions run high when its revealed there's a potentially deadly price to be paid for the girl's special gift, while the hyper-real depiction of Tokyo's bustling city centre and extraordinary rendering of meteorological mayhem bring a genuine sense of wonder to proceedings. Catnip for anime aficionados.
