Our Score
Scripted by WC Fields under the name of Mahatma Kane Jeeves, this is one of his finest comedies. Playing the wonderfully named Egbert Sousé, Fields growls and grumbles his way through some inspired routines as the indolent passer-by who is rewarded with the post of bank detective after inadvertently foiling a raid. Even though several gags are rehashed from his celebrated shorts, they are done to a crisp by Fields and a superb supporting cast, of which Cora Witherspoon, Una Merkel and Jessie Ralph are outstanding as the women who delight in wearily pointing out the shortcomings he considers his assets.
