Our Score
Kevin Costner makes a rare foray into horror territory, playing a single father in a new town who finds himself up against the unknown when a paranormal entity threatens to consume his teenage daughter (Ivana Baquero of Pan's Labyrinth). Director Luis Berdejo ticks off several worn-out clichés (a haunted house, creepy dolls, even creepier children) and while he brings a lingering sense of foreboding to the action, it moves at a pace that leaves you begging for urgency. Crisp cinematography and a moody atmosphere do make for some chilling moments and Costner is watchable, relatable and even empathetic in his performance as a man unequipped for dealing with his responsibilities. That helps to raise the stakes when the supernatural events start to kick in, but it's too little too late. Paired with a creepy performance from Baquero, The New Daughter is a diverting but unremarkable horror movie.
