Our Score
Ever since Herbert G Ponting recorded Captain Scott's ill-fated bid to reach the South Pole, the movie camera has been accompanying heroic ventures. Shot in even more arduous conditions, this is a remarkable account of the expedition that saw Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing become the first to reach the peak of the world's highest mountain. It's a pity the camera couldn't make the final ascent, but the various stages of the climb, with their attendant difficulties and dangers, make gripping viewing thanks to some inspired editing, Louis MacNeice's literate commentary and Arthur Benjamin's rousing score.

Documentary about the first expedition to the peak of the world's highest mountain, featuring contributions from Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary.
