Our Score
Paul Newman plays a grouchy town rogue who is forced to face up to his family responsibilities when his long-neglected son turns up for Thanksgiving in this pleasing low-key film from Kramer vs Kramer director Robert Benton. An old hand at this kind of heart-warming fare, Benton doesn't swamp it with sentimentality, allowing the crumpled charisma of Newman to effortlessly carry the drama. He is also well served by an exceptionally starry cast in which the likes of Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith line up with venerable character actors such as Jessica Tandy and Josef Sommer.
