Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Titled after a nursery rhyme, this great big dollop of Scandi strangeness sees a grieving couple going off on a camping trip to get over the death of their young daughter. But they find themselves viciously set upon, night after night, by three carnival-type characters from out of the woods. Think Groundhog Day as made by Michael Haneke (Funny Games). Is it an allegory of grief and the grieving process, and how you gradually make your way through it? Or a recipe for repairing the couple's fracturing relationship? Maybe. But what have a recurring white pussycat and music box got to do with it? Maybe it's all a Scandinavian thing. Slickly made but wilfully obscure and odd, Koko-di Koko-da is the very definition of a Marmite movie: one that will fascinate and stimulate some, but frustrate and infuriate others.
