The chance to see Coronation Street's Betty Driver as a movie heroine is the only reason to catch this piffling Ealing comedy. Caught between the ambitions of her music-hall mother and strict chorister father, she also catches the eye of Jimmy O'Dea, a chirpy Irish know-all who hopes to find fame on Lancashire bigwig Basil Radford's radio programme. Only in 1930s Britain would anyone think that a spelling bee could be a source of hilarity. But it's a darn sight funnier than either O'Dea's calamitous parachute jump or the nightmare broadcast which culminates in him getting drunk on air with Sonnie Hale.

A starstruck Irish shopkeeper heads for London in search of fame and fortune, picking up an aspiring Lancastrian singer along the way. Comedy, starring Jimmy O'Dea, Betty Driver, Sonnie Hale, Basil Radford and Lena Brown.
