Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Jane Austen's tale of love and matchmaking is handsomely brought to the screen with Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular meddling romantic causing havoc in Georgian England. Lavish sets and vibrant colours make the 200-year-old story feel fresh, and the cast is just as rejuvenating, offering a more modern sensibility while still respecting the source material. Taylor-Joy plays Emma with intelligence and wit, making her schemes a ballet of subtlety. Johnny Flynn is more brooding as George Knightley, but his journey from critic to love interest feels authentic. These pillars are surrounded by excellent comic turns from the likes of Josh O'Connor, Bill Nighy and Miranda Hart as the goofy eccentrics that make up Emma's world. Bringing a new perspective to a literary classic is no mean feat, but director Autumn de Wilde's skilful use of a talented cast makes Emma feel as relevant as ever.
