Review

Our Score
Angela Lansbury enjoys a bit of novelty casting in this third TV movie based on the popular TV series. In a tale about a 140-year-old mystery, Lansbury plays both the crime-busting Jessica Fletcher and Fletcher's own great aunt, in a series of flashbacks that help to shed light on the case of a slave who was lynched after being accused of the murder of a white plantation owner. The drama soft-soaps the racial issues that placed the blame on the slave (played by Michael Jace), but there's a brave attempt to tie in the period flashbacks with a contemporary controversy involving Jace's academic descendant, Phylicia Rashad, and David Ogden Stiers's pompous bigot.

Summary

Jessica Fletcher investigates the death of a slave owned by her late aunt and discovers sinister secrets relating to her other relatives, who were far from law-abiding citizens. Mystery based on the TV series, starring Angela Lansbury in a dual role, alongside Phylicia Rashad, Michael Jace and David Ogden Stiers.
