Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Originally made for American TV, but released in cinemas over here, this detailed account of the famous shipping disaster combines fact and fiction as uneasily as it mixes its Anglo-American cast. Director William Hale's grip on the drama is tenuous, and the result is regrettably rather low key and cheap looking. It's certainly not a patch on Rank's A Night to Remember or even the Clifton Webb-Barbara Stanwyck Titanic for 20th Century-Fox, let alone James Cameron's 1997 blockbuster. Still, Helen Mirren, Ian Holm, Harry Andrews, David Warner, David Janssen and Susan Saint James suffer nobly as the ship goes down.
