Our Score
Christopher Lee's commanding presence is splendidly suited to his role here as the lecherous mystic who dominated the Romanov court of pre-revolutionary Russia and carved a debauched path through its ladies-in-waiting. But, although it was an intriguing change of pace for Hammer, with stylish studio regular Barbara Shelley present and correct as a different sort of scream queen, the tale eventually degenerates into wild-eyed hysteria, and Lee's acting follows suit.
