The Face at the Window

The Face at the Window

George King (1939)

A Certificate

Our Score
Arguably barnstormer Tod Slaughter's best performance (surely no one ever called it acting?) was in this third version of a Parisian Petit Guignol about a revived presumed-dead body, revealing our hero and his mad brother to be serious bank robbers. Slaughter follows in the murky footsteps of predecessors C Aubrey Smith and Raymond Massey in the earlier versions, and chews a good deal more scenery than either. Director George King keeps the length down to just over an hour, but sometimes the pace is, dare we suggest, funereal.

As with any film featuring the outrageously operatic antics of early horror star Tod Slaughter, this slow, stagebound murder-mystery would be completely unwatchable without the producer-star's presence.
