Ashok Kumar is the nominal star of this period musical set in the magnificent city of Lucknow at the turn of the last century. However, the storyline turns on student Rajendra Kumar's passion for the innocent and burkha-clad Sadhana, that is predictably frowned upon by his elitist, class-conscious family. The film is best remembered today for Naushad's title song, which is performed at various times by legendary playback singers Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. Mention should also be made of HS Rawail's direction. Although he was something of a slapstick specialist, the colourful theatricality he brings to the action adds considerably to the charm of this cross-class romance.

A budding poet falls in love with a college girl and writes love songs extolling her beauty. However, their chances for happiness are threatened by class differences and family opposition to the match. Romantic musical, starring Sadhana, Rajendra Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Nimmi and Johnny Walker. In Urdu, English and Hindi.
