Review

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Richard Pryor, a journalist fallen on hard times, is working as a janitor at the Bates department store. His slapstick incompetence at dealing with an inflatable toy is watched by nine-year-old Eric, the spoiled heir to the Bates empire. Eric is allowed to visit his father (Jackie Gleason) at work once every year and to have anything he chooses for that week. Eric chooses to have Jack as a human "toy". An adaptation of Francis Veber's 1976 French film Le Jouet, this version has some fine moments (especially at the start) but soon degenerates into a mawkish message movie. Brilliant stand-up star Pryor deserved better material.
