Our Score
Directed by Doug McHenry, who co-produced New Jack City, this curiously old-fashioned film attempts to put a new slant on the African-American experience. Although it revisits the familiar "going bad in the ghetto" theme, this feels more like a Hollywood problem picture of the late 1940s than an explosion of justifiable anger. This is mostly down to the fact that McHenry places as much emphasis on Allen Payne's sweet romance with Jada Pinkett as he does on his relationship with tearaway brother Bokeem Woodbine, who seems to have inherited the troubled mind of their dead father, played in flashback by Forest Whitaker. Uncertain but uplifting.

A salesman's fledgling romance with a winsome waitress is jeopardised by his brother, a no-good, drug-abusing thief. Drama, starring Allen Payne, Bokeem Woodbine, Forest Whitaker and Jada Pinkett Smith.
