Or "Afreeka" as Meryl Streep would have it, using a bizarre Danish accent that manages to overshadow her entire performance as awkward, free-spirited writer and farmer Karen Blixen. This is a beautifully filmed movie, with director Sydney Pollack propelling the camera across a lush Kenyan landscape that teems with all manner of exotic beasts. The other exotic beasts - Streep, Klaus Maria Brandauer as her husband and Robert Redford as her adventurer lover - overact on a level to match the magnificence of the backdrop, but with this cast it is still eminently watchable stuff. What the movie loses in emotional realism, it gains in sheer epic audacity.
Summary
Fact-based romantic drama based on the life of writer Karen Blixen, who, after relocating from Denmark to a farm in Nairobi for a marriage of convenience, embarked on a passionate and ill-fated love affair with an idealistic British adventurer. Starring Meryl Streep, Robert Redford, Michael Kitchen, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Leslie Phillips.
