Our Score
The shadow of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho looms large over this lean, mean horror thriller from Kontroll director Nimrod Antal. Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale play the estranged couple who are forced to stay in a seedy motel after their car breaks down late one night. The discovery of a stack of slasher films in their room leads to the terrifying realisation that they're about to be the stars/victims of their very own snuff movie. Avoiding gore in favour of throat-grabbing tension, Antal extracts the maximum number of claustrophobic chills from this motel-hell scenario, as the stressed couple desperately bang on doors and walls. Credibility is stretched, yet never undermines the sense of dread lurking in squalid rooms and underground tunnels, where nicely cast Wilson and Beckinsale hide from the murderous, masked assailants. Antal and cinematographer Andrzej Sekula compose each shot for enhanced impact - providing the perfect counterpoint to the sleazy setting and sordid premise.

Summary

A couple whose car breaks down in the middle of nowhere are forced to seek shelter at an isolated motel. However, when they discover videotapes of people being killed in their room, they realise the motel owner has a penchant for casting guests in his home-made snuff movies - and they are about to become the latest victims. Horror, with Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson, Frank Whaley and Scott G Anderson.
