Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Prisoner of war films typically focus on daring escapes and the digging of tunnels, but this drama based on real events is a more intimate character piece. Jack Ashton stars as an American bomber pilot who, after being shot down over Germany, barters with his fellow PoWs to collect the wood, glue and other materials he needs to build a violin. He wants to have the instrument ready to play carols at Christmas, and the narrative follows the other soldiers' initial bemusement as it develops into deeper understanding. Ashton is impressive in conveying both the harrowing nature of his surroundings and the strength of human spirit in difficult circumstances. The dialogue may be cliché ("For you, the war is over..."), but director Adam Thomas Anderegg presents a thoughtful study of bonds formed in confinement and the steely resolve of men on a mission.
