Our Score
This still controversial psychodrama from director Bernardo Bertolucci blazed new cinematic frontiers in the way sex was treated on screen. Artfully shot, it's the steamy and thought-provoking tale of the intense love affair that ignites between two strangers when they meet while viewing an apartment. Marlon Brando is trying to get over his wife's suicide, Maria Schneider is about to marry, and both cling to their anonymous and increasingly frank liaisons in order to separate their sexual desires from their oppressive daily realities. More existential than erotic, this brilliant study of a broken, tortured man allows Brando to deliver a devastating performance, alternately ranging between ferocity and tenderness, pathos and vulgarity. Gato Barbieri's marvellous jazz score creates a delirious atmosphere, conducive to the breaking of taboos.

An angry middle-aged American widower living in Paris meets a naive 20-year-old French woman while viewing an apartment, and embarks on an intense sexual relationship with her. Bernardo Bertolucci's drama, starring Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, Jean-Pierre Leaud and Massimo Girotti.
