A haphazard journey home ensues when Olga (Kierston Wareing) and her put-upon son Ron (Tommy French) find themselves stranded in Morocco. The action is set up quickly through the catalyst of stolen cheese, with the continually arguing leads running from one disaster into another. The repetitive and unrealistic plot is made entertaining by French as a lovable oaf lamenting his lot, perfectly complemented by Wareing's mother from hell - a selfish, manipulative booze cruiser with lies as clumsy as her make-up. Inserting this kind of comedy into more serious situations, such as when the pair are evicted from a refugee boat, misfires spectacularly. However, the script quickly guides them toward more frivolous misadventures like Ron's ludicrous romantic side plot. The premise of I Love My Mum had potential to make comedic and timely observations about immigration. Instead, the film settles for being a light-hearted "Brits abroad" comedy that's consistently amusing but never hilarious.
