Mel Gibson takes on the role first played so brilliantly by Bob Peck in this remake of the BBC's 1985 mini-series. He plays Thomas Craven, a detective whose adult daughter is shockingly, and inexplicably, gunned down on his doorstep. Craven's subsequent investigation sees him drawn into a terrifying political and corporate conspiracy. The series, directed by Martin Campbell, is one of the undoubted high points of British TV drama, and fans are likely to be mildly disappointed by the transposition to the big screen. Campbell may once again be behind the camera, but condensing the action from six hours to just two inevitably means that some of the plot's complexity and atmosphere is lost. Ray Winstone's turn as a government fixer is also no substitute for Joe Don Baker's memorable performance in the original. But Gibson is on good form and Campbell, as you would expect from the director of Casino Royale and GoldenEye, stages some effective set pieces.

Thriller based on the 1985 BBC series, starring Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic, Shawn Roberts and David Aaron Baker.
