In this splendidly titled biographical western, baby-faced war hero Audie Murphy stars as John Philip Clum, the Indian agent who was responsible for liaising with the captured Apache warrior Geronimo - a role taken for the third time on screen by Jay Silverheels, best known for playing Tonto in TV's
The Lone Ranger
. This potentially powerful story of conflict is rather spoiled by the emphasis on Clum's domestic troubles, which nullifies the original premise. Nevertheless, Murphy is convincing, and both Pat Crowley and Anne Bancroft are excellent in supporting roles.
Summary
A government agent tries to establish peaceful coexistence between Apaches and settlers, abandoning the brutal tactics of the military in favour of diplomacy. However, to complete his mission, he must persuade the famous renegade chief Geronimo to surrender. Fact-based Western, starring Audie Murphy and Anne Bancroft.
