Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A young Londoner's identity is compromised when her volatile ex disfigures her with acid in Sacha Polak's powerful English-language debut. Co-writing with Susanne Farrell, the Dutch director forgoes grim realism for something more fluid, colourful and feisty, coaxing a performance of remarkable guts and assurance from first-timer Vicky Knight, whose real, relatively superficial facial scars were enhanced by a prosthesis. She plays Jade, unapologetic hedonist and mother to a toddler. Following the attack, with her looks no longer her currency, she tries to find her feet amid her judgemental and sexually charged social scene while satisfying her desires. Initially flanked by her best friend Shami (Rebecca Stone) and mum (Katherine Kelly), such support ebbs away - though messing with Shami's boyfriend (singer Bluey Robinson) and neglecting her daughter doesn't help. Reckless and rebellious, Jade refuses to allow herself to be diminished by the pity and horror of others. Set against a background of poverty pay, crime and the quest for bodily perfection, Dirty God shows us a cruel world, but Polak traces Jade's journey with empathy and revels in her defiance.
