Our Score
Sadly not the 1937 nor the 1954 version, but the 1976 remake that didn't quite work, starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson as the star-crossed lovers on self destruct. They tried to bring the action screechingly up to date with a contemporary rock soundtrack, but there's little finesse as everyone rushes around in 1970s styling (loon pants, afghan coats, chiffon neckerchiefs) that already looked pretty dated on release. The movie's basic problem is that we simply cannot believe that Streisand and Kristofferson are in the throes of a passionate love affair. Babs can sure belt out a tune, though, particularly that Oscar-winning theme song Evergreen.

A talented rock star's career begins to wind down as he drifts into cynicism and hits the bottle. However, an encounter with a promising singer proves inspirational and he helps nurture her career. But as she climbs the road to stardom, he goes into an even greater decline. Remake of the musical, starring Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson, Paul Mazursky, Gary Busey and Marta Heflin.
