Our Score
Masterfully directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), this audaciously manipulative charmer sees a group of British pensioners relocate to India for their retirement, lured by the promise of cheap luxury at the establishment of the title. But the place, run by ever-optimistic manager Dev Patel (in a sweetly subtle performance), turns out to be a dump. However, the colourful location and the pensioners' shared experiences have a transformative effect, underlining the resilience of the human spirit. The film does become slightly predictable - Maggie Smith's xenophobia mellows, henpecked Bill Nighy finds himself and Judi Dench is faced with a romantic conundrum - yet it never once strays from satisfying, feel-good magic. This poignant tale has an irresistible, heart-warming energy and also boasts sharp dialogue, skilfully interwoven subplots and a treasure trove of British stars giving a masterclass in ensemble acting.

Seven English pensioners looking for a fresh start are drawn to an advert for a hotel in the Indian city of Jaipur, and plan to spend their retirement there. They arrive to find the building dilapidated but are won over by the enthusiastic young manager, and each embarks on their own adventures in the city. Comedy drama, starring Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel.
