Our Score
Anna May Wong carved out a significant career in the 1920s and early 30s, though Hollywood tended to cast the Chinese-American actress in stereotypical "Dragon Lady" roles. She received more rewarding parts when working in Europe, as was the case here where she stars as a charismatic Chinese club owner trying to make a living in a lowlife backwater. Plagued by gangs of ruffians, she's aided by a dapper Englishman (Victor Garland) who's fallen in love with her foster sister. Not surprisingly for its vintage, the film is a bit creaky and its occasional broad humour seems ill placed, but Wong is a shimmering presence in a well-lit melodrama that doesn't overstay its welcome.
