Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Shine director Scott Hicks delves into Young Adult fantasy with this bonkers romance about a troubled young woman, who finds herself in a love triangle at a school attended by fallen angels. Taking particular inspiration from Twilight (to the point where some scenes appear directly reconstructed), the story is a shallow teenage romance that will please only devoted fans of the original novel by Lauren Kate. The characters are undeveloped, lifeless creations that strut around moodily and ultimately come across as unpleasant. Jeremy Irvine's Daniel dresses and acts like a Robert Pattinson proxy, with Harrison Gilbertson as his rebellious love rival. In the middle is Addison Timlin, who seems to do little except swoon over her suitors. Coming across as ten years behind the times, Fallen's devotion to the YA formula leads it down a hopeless, distracting road of clichés and unsatisfying conclusions that put it at the bottom of the genre pile.
