Director Alexandre Aja follows his 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes with this update of the 2003 Korean horror Into the Mirror. Kiefer Sutherland plays a disgraced cop who takes a job as a night security guard at a fire-ravaged department store. Soon he begins to see grotesque images in the building's mirrors, including violent visions of himself being tortured, which signify that Sutherland and his estranged family are in terrible danger. Although it's bigger and grander than the original and boasts a neat twist, Aja's film can't shake off the familiar Asian ghost story preoccupations with possessed objects and cursed girls. The sense of creeping dread is reasonably maintained (the store's gothic-style interior is eerily atmospheric) and there are some effective jolts along the way, but the jumble of expository clues and explanations becomes increasingly contrived. Ultimately, nothing properly meshes in Aja's looking glass into murky spirituality, dodgy psychotherapy and shudder-inducing splatter.

An alcoholic former cop quits drinking and tries to turn his life around with a new job as a nightwatchman. As he patrols the building he guards, he begins seeing strange images in the mirrors, and when his sister is murdered he becomes convinced an evil spirit that lives in reflections is haunting him - but his ex-wife thinks he is just hallucinating. Horror, starring Kiefer Sutherland and Paula Patton.
