Our Score
A film built around a cult children's TV character may seem a strange place for Tim Burton to start his feature career, but, actually, it's not that big a leap from Pee-wee Herman to Edward Scissorhands, Batman or Ed Wood. At the centre of this cartoonish comedy, Paul Reubens is wonderful as the curious little chap whose world falls apart when his precious bicycle is stolen. It's a bold attempt to do something dazzlingly original, although some of the gags are spectacularly unfunny and Pee-wee's nervous prattling can become irritating. For a truly subversive road movie, see Beavis and Butt-head Do America.
