Our Score
Albert Finney gives a great performance here as the eccentric Alfie, the poetry-loving Dublin bus conductor with a tenacious dream to stage Oscar Wilde's play Salome in the local village hall, an ambition that sets off a train of unfortunate events. One of the film's splendidly handled central themes is the painful comparison between Finney's ebullient public face and his sexually repressed private hell. Dublin in 1963 is realistically brought to life in this major treat.
