Our Score
After years of dodging the Hollywood blacklist by releasing films under pseudonyms or crediting them to other film-makers, Joseph Losey was able to put his own name to this adaptation of Emlyn Williams's stage play Someone Waiting. Although the story of a father trying to save his son from the gallows is supposed to be a thriller, Losey places so much emphasis on the capital punishment angle that the social theme too often swamps the suspense. Michael Redgrave is solid, however, as the alcoholic dad fighting against time, and Freddie Francis's photography enhances the sense of desperation. Muddled, perhaps, but undeniably provocative.

Summary

An alcoholic writer returns home after years living abroad when he learns his estranged son has been convicted of murder and sentenced to hang. Although his attempts at reconciliation are rejected, he spends the last 24 hours before the execution trying to prove his son is innocent by identifying the real killer. Mystery, starring Michael Redgrave, Ann Todd, Leo McKern and Peter Cushing.
