Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A would-be radical with mental health problems is manipulated by the FBI into plotting a terror attack in this black comedy from arch-satirist Chris Morris, who cut his teeth on TV's The Day Today and Brass Eye in the 1990s. Mild-mannered preacher Moses (Marchant Davis) seeks to correct racial disparity in his Miami home town, but is unaware that his shadowy backers are in fact the American authorities, intent on exaggerating threats to justify further covert operations - a far-fetched notion, perhaps, but one the director claims is based on reality (an introductory on-screen caption tells viewers the film is "based on a hundred true stories"). The inept terrorists' naivety and use of toy weapons and farm animals inevitably invites comparisons with Morris's 2010 big-screen outing Four Lions, but here the belly laughs are part of a much bleaker and cynical narrative. Davis impresses (on his feature debut) as both a comic presence and as a man struggling with more personal demons in a movie that provokes thought as much as it pokes fun.
