Our Score
The man who photographed Black Narcissus, A Matter of Life and Death, The Red Shoes and The African Queen - Jack Cardiff - turned director with this B-thriller, set in Montreal. Critics at the time wondered why he bothered. Richard Todd plays a brain surgeon whose marital problems pale into insignificance when he's asked to operate on a South American leader (Herbert Lom) who is the target for assassins. Forget about Lom's record on human rights - not the film's concern - and concentrate instead on the mechanics of thriller-making, as the movie finishes up, according to Variety, "with a socko climax of murder and mayhem".
