Review

Dennis Quaid plays a legendary American football star in this saga of sporting success and failure that begins in the Eisenhower era of flash cars, material plenty and patriotism. Quaid marries a local beauty queen (Jessica Lange), and the film charts 25 turbulent years in their lives. Directed by An Officer and a Gentleman's Taylor Hackford, the picture comes across as Born on the Fourth of July meets Bull Durham meets any TV soap you care to name. It's over-plotted, yet somehow seems a sparse tale, though Lange's performance, as always, lifts the essentially lightweight material.
