Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Waiter Dev Patel and head chef Anupam Kher risk their lives to protect patrons from terrorists in this dramatisation of the 2008 siege of Mumbai's Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Director Anthony Maras takes an unflinching look at a horrific event, re-creating every death with disturbing detail. It's debatable whether this bloody depiction is realism or exploitation, but it does underline its enormity. The focus on the violence means many of the performances are more about survival rather than revealing the people behind the headlines. Given its real-life inspiration, there's something uncomfortable about Hotel Mumbai's devotion to showing the true horror of what happened, but it leaves you in no doubt of the heroism of those involved.
