Our Score
Notwithstanding its Carry On credentials, this gentle comedy of embarrassment could not be further from the bawdy humour of the celebrated series. Adapted by Norman Hudis from Basil Thomas's stage hit Book of the Month, it boasts Leslie Phillips, Joan Sims and Charles Hawtrey among those aghast at the revelations contained in a potboiling novel populated by local luminaries. It's a one-joke affair, but Carry On director Gerald Thomas ensures the cast of practised comics keeps it light and frothy. Parents Ted Ray and Jean Kent are overly priggish, but Julia Lockwood (daughter of Wicked Lady Margaret) has a ball as the teenage novelist.

A shy teenager belies her staid image by writing a steamy Peyton Place-style bestseller featuring a bunch of sex-mad boozy characters with a strange resemblance to her eccentric friends and family, who hit the roof when they discover what she's done. Comedy directed by Gerald Thomas of Carry On fame and starring Leslie Phillips, Joan Sims, Charles Hawtrey, Ted Ray, Jean Kent and Julia Lockwood.
