Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this lightweight animation, japes and high jinks ensue in Buckingham Palace when Her Majesty (voiced by Julie Walters) has a visit from US President Trump (Jon Culshaw), who brings his pampered pooch, Mitzi. The Queen's favourite corgi, Rex (Jack Whitehall) does his best to resist being paired off with Mitzi, but falls foul of his canine palace rival, is lured away from the palace and ends up in an animal shelter. Apart from a tiny handful of perfectly executed set pieces, the laughs are thin on the ground, the overall narrative struggling to hold the attention of the young audience for which it's intended. Rex, however, is undeniably cute, and might feasibly have a better chance of becoming a children's favourite if his adventures were offered up in smaller doses as a more humble TV series.
