Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

After taking her maniacal bow as Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad ensemble piece, Margot Robbie moves centre stage as the figurehead of an all-new, all-female gang in this eye-popping addition to the DC extended universe. Still nursing a broken heart after splitting from the Joker, the foul-mouthed feminista heads up a superhero posse including Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) to rescue a young girl who has fallen into the clutches of Ewan McGregor's narcissistic crime lord, Black Mask. The pace may stumble and the plot occasionally baffle, but that's forgivable when the film is such a visually stunning, joyful thrill ride. It boasts a solid, never-preachy message about female empowerment and the strength of sisterhood, the fight scenes dazzle and a succession of sharp one-liners almost all hit their target. The whole shebang is held together by Robbie's captivating and suitably over-the-top performance as the taking-care-of-business bad girl audiences can't help rooting for.
