Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A former advertising executive (Billy Crudup) devastated by the death of his son finds a way to heal when he discovers music demos in the boy's room, which he decides to learn. Shameless star William H Macy's first stab at directing a feature feels manipulative at times, forcing emotionally charged subject matter into the narrative when a gentler approach would have been more effective. Nevertheless, the cast all succeed in creating a group of likeable and believable characters. Crudup's journey is endearing, even more so when he forms a charming bond with local musician Quentin (Anton Yelchin), who encourages him to perform. However, the steady build-up is derailed by a late revelation that feels unnecessarily traumatic and more likely to draw a groan rather than a gasp. While melodrama weighs down what could have been an excellent story, fine performances and catchy music compensate and deliver an enjoyable tale of personal redemption.
