Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

This was Norman Wisdom's film debut and, according to some, it was all downhill from here. It's certainly one of his best outings, largely because the sentimentality that became almost unbearable in his later films is rigorously kept in check here by director John Paddy Carstairs. Wisdom is as willing and as hopeless as ever, but he still manages to take time off from his hectic schedule of driving store boss Jerry Desmonde to the brink of distraction to find romance with Lana Morris. Desmonde's comic fury is a joy to watch, as is Margaret Rutherford's twittery performance as a nervous shoplifter.
