Our Score
The winner of a number of film festival prizes, Jack Hazan's documentary portrait of David Hockney admirably captures the visual style of the artist, without ever quite breaking through his defences. Touching on the closeness of his friendships and his penchant for revisiting favourite haunts, the action mostly concerns his relationship with his latest sitter, Peter Schlesinger. Revealing the considerable personal stake Hockney invests in each new project, the film is less concerned with his methods than with the way in which he relates to his model and how he copes with the completion of his work. Precious, but illuminating.

Summary

An artist is working on a painting when his partner leaves him after five years together. The break-up has an adverse effect on him over the next three years, leaving him unable to complete the work and forced to increasingly rely on the support of his friends. Drama, starring David Hockney as a fictionalised version of himself, with Peter Schlesinger and Celia Birtwell.
