Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Joel Kinnaman plays divorced father Elliot, whose mind begins to unravel when he becomes stranded in the woods with his young sons (Tom Holland and Percy Hynes White). The film spends the first act offering up a number of clichéd plot devices such as Elliot's resentful ex-wife and her squeaky clean new partner, and symbolic shooting practice with his boys. Once he begins to turn, things become even more hackneyed, as the twists become bigger and harder to swallow. Luckily, there is a cast that adds humanity. Even when he goes off the deep end, there's a relatable sense of desperation to his performance. And once things do get dangerous, Holland and White strike a great balance between affection and fear. This all leads to a tense climax, even if it's one you may see coming. While Edge of Winter spends much of its time treading through psycho-thriller clichés, its three very talented stars add emotional heft to a predictable path.
