Our Score
The Oscar-winning screenplay for this stops-out melodrama was written by the husband-and-wife team of Sydney and Muriel Box. But, whichever way you slice it, there's no escaping the fact that, for all its aspirations to musical and psychological gravity, this is nothing more than home-cured ham. Ann Todd is at her drippiest as a persecuted pianist whose love/hate relationship with crippled guardian James Mason is founded on romantic clichés that first appeared in Victorian penny-dreadfuls. Having said that, it's still irresistible entertainment, done with considerable style, and Mason is tremendous as a brooding brute.

A woman suffering from amnesia struggles to recapture her memories. In a series of flashbacks, it becomes clear she's a brilliant concert pianist. However, her problems seem to stem from her romantic entanglement with an embittered musician, who soon falls foul of insane jealousy - leading to tragedy. Melodrama, starring James Mason, Ann Todd and Herbert Lom.
