Our Score
The story of how Neil Armstrong got to the Moon is told in rich and intimate detail in this thrilling film that focuses as much on the man as it does his extraordinary achievement. Ryan Gosling portrays the astronaut as a humble deep-thinker, uncomfortable in the spotlight and all too aware of the risks inherent in the mission. His subtlety and understatement is matched by an equally nuanced performance from Claire Foy as his wife, Janet. Director Damien Chazelle nods to, rather than borrows from, earlier real-life space exploration movies (The Right Stuff, Apollo 13), delivering a more character-driven piece, a keenly observed family drama that just happens to lead to one of the greatest moments in history. The build-up to the mission and Armstrong's eventual blast-off is chronicled in precise yet never clinical detail via some dazzling special effects, but the work of both Gosling and Foy is equally as breathtaking. They are magnificent together.

Summary

A look at the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong, from his early days in 1961 as a NASA test pilot. By the late 1960s, as he becomes emotionally distant from his family, he embarks on a space mission that leads to him becoming the first man to walk on the moon.
