Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An awkward first date turns nightmarish for two African-Americans when they go on the run from justice in this dramatic debut from noted pop video director Melina Matsoukas. Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith - both British-born, incidentally - are charismatic and convincing as two strangers who become a couple while fleeing arrest, following a volatile encounter with an aggressive white cop. When footage of the incident goes viral, they also find themselves bemused by the folk-hero status that tragic events have thrust upon them. Though individual police officers run the gamut from racist to compassionate, the film offers an undeniably jaundiced view of US law enforcement. It also provides a compelling overview on how injustices prompt activist protest and a cycle of deepening mistrust. As a road movie that's also a state-of-the-nation survey, Queen & Slim offers a more challenging contemporary counterpart to the soothing approach of the Oscar-winning Green Book. It's a provocative yet nuanced effort, with striking visuals creating a richly heightened reality, backed up by a simmering retro-soul soundtrack.
