Our Score
Female firefighter Brooke Burns takes extreme measures to prove her worth in this nonetheless bland triumph-through-adversity tale. Wrongfully blamed for her fire captain father getting killed just prior to his retirement, she signs up for the ultra-perilous and elite discipline of smoke jumping - which involves parachuting into forest blazes. So begins a GI Jane-type battle to overcome sexism and gain respect: a struggle complicated by increasing family friction. Naturally, all three issues are simultaneously resolved in the contrived and convenient finale, even though the badly cast Burns doesn't really seem capable of it. Scenery-chewing performances and dodgy CGI intensify the film's lack of realism, while insipid direction ensures death, danger and disaster are neither dramatic nor poignant.
