Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

As a member of the Caddie Hall of Fame, narrator Bill Murray clearly feels an affinity with the bag handlers whose credo was once "show up, keep up, shut up". Being a surf specialist rather than a devoted golfer, director Jason Baffa opens proceedings with a droll history of the sport that makes deft use of cartoonish animation to explore the lore and laws that were transformed by the same Old Tom Morris who was profiled in Jason Connery's Tommy's Honour (2016). But, while Baffa captures the atmosphere of the courses he visits and muses on the fraternal bond between a top professional and his caddie, he ducks the class and racial issues thrown up by the customs practiced at venues like the Augusta National, which barred outside caddies until the early 1980s. Moreover, in celebrating the bonds between Ben Crenshaw and Carl Jackson or Nick Faldo and Fanny Sunesson, Baffa and writer Carl Cramer avoid discussing the messy end of Tiger Woods's liaison with Steve Williams. It's on the fairway, but short of the pin.
