Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

There will be those who feel they know all they need to about Laura Albert, especially if they've seen The Cult of JT LeRoy and Author: the JT LeRoy Story, in which documentarists Marjorie Sturm and Jeff Feuerzeig examined the literary "hoax" Albert perpetrated. However, director Justin Kelly believes a dramatic reconstruction would better help audiences understand why Albert (Laura Dern) felt the need to create the avatar of transsexual Jeremiah Terminator LeRoy and then pose as his British manager, while also persuading sister-in-law Savannah (Kristen Stewart) to embody LeRoy for a series of publicity stunts. In real life, the situation became further complicated when film-maker Asia Argento adapted one of LeRoy's novels and then embarked upon a relationship with Savannah - a fact Kelly has opted to give the "roman à clef" treatment by renaming Argento as Eva (Diane Kruger). Stewart excels in portraying the gender issues underpinning the ruse, yet, in drawing on Savannah's 2008 memoir Girl Boy Girl, Kelly seems curiously uninterested in the interior lives of these compelling and chameleonic characters.
